Here’s the DIY Recipe For Non-Toxic ’No Mouse In My House’ Pest Repellent

Harry MasonOctober 12, 2023

Today, we’re diving into the world of DIY pest control, courtesy of one of our own—Nicole Jaques. Nicole certainly had her thinking cap on when she came up with this simple yet effective solution to keep mice at bay: a non-toxic pest repellent made with just a handful of household ingredients.

The best part? It’s as easy to make as your morning Joe.

First things first, gather your ingredients. For your convenience, here’s a handy checklist:

  • Sachet bags — Nicole got hers off Amazon, but any small, breathable bag will do the trick.

  • Whole cinnamon sticks — fragrance and flavor aside- have proven to be unappealing to our pesky rodents.

  • Whole cloves — a staple in most spice cabinets that serves double duty in this crafty project.

  • Cayenne or red chili flakes — Mice and their spice intolerance are your advantage here.

  • Optional: Peppermint oil — a few dabs on the sachet can enhance the repellent effect.

You’ll notice this looks more like a spicy tea blend than a pest repellent, but trust us, the mice disagree horrifically. Ready to get mixing? Don’t worry; you won’t need an apron or safety goggles for this one.

Fill each sachet bag with a cinnamon stick, a sprinkle of clove, and a hearty pinch of cayenne or chili flakes. As for the ratio, think of equal parts; there’s no precise science here, so have fun with it! Optionally, top it off with a few dabs of peppermint oil on the sachets for an added aromatic barricade.

And behold, your non-toxic, decorative “No Mouse in My House” pest repellents are ready.

Now that your sachet bags are armed and ready, it’s time to place them strategically in your home. Think like a mouse—where would you love to saunter? Definitely near any food items—including pet food or pantry staples. Don’t forget hidden areas like beneath the sink, laundry rooms, or near garbage areas.

A pro tip from Nicole: placing a few sachets outdoors near possible entry points creates an extra line of defense. The little touches like these make this DIY repellent a compelling choice for your pest control arsenal.

With this all-natural, non-toxic pest repellent, you’ll ensure a safer environment for your household and contribute to a greener environment. Happy crafting, friends—and here’s to a mouse-free home!
